OnionsBooru was the precursor to the modern day SoyBooru.
History
[edit | edit source]OnionsBooru was created by lolkek as a private 'jak collection on August 3rd after the previous public booru, soybooru.booru.org, had closed down following spam attacks. A victim of an inactive moderation and owner, these types of problems were constant, so on August 25, lolkek had requested to the booru.org staff for the soybooru to be handed over to him, but the admin instead decided it was better to delete the site entirely since it contained too much gore and porn that needed to be removed. A few days prior however, on the August 19, Lolkek decided to make the OnionsBooru public after someone requested a successor to be made, and on August 26, its domain soyjak.win was pinned on /soy/. On September 6 2021, Soot announced that Lolkek had given him ownership of the booru and he had made a new domain called booru.soy.
The name of the OnionsBooru was a reference to the 4chan wordfilter that turned the word "soy" into "onions", and the onion logo had remained for the site years to come. Eventually, it was renamed to SoyBooru since there wasn't a need to differentiate from the predecessor after its shutdown, as well as after /qa/ was locked and most of the soy community moved to the sharty, the onions wordfilter was gone and thus no longer relevant. After a wipeout and shutdown, most of the OnionsBooru era posts had to be reuploaded on March 31st 2022 after it came back online, thus making their original posting date unclear without archives.
