This page serves as a guideline for Sysops. First off, you do it for free. Second, as a Sysop, you're volunteering to serve the community. Don't be a powerSysop, don't go on a clitty leaking rampage like an SLF.

As a Sysop, you WILL maintain good conduct.

Rules for Sysop

[edit source]
  1. You WILL enforce the Rules
  2. You WILL follow the Rules
  3. You WILL NOT ban an innocent user
  4. You WILL NOT fight with or disrupt a higher ranking Sysop

Handing Out Blocks

[edit source]

Editors are expected to follow the Rules, and Sysops are expected to enforce them. If you block a user that broke no rules, then the ban is unfair. If you do this, you might get warned or de-jannied. Therefore, keep your bans fair.

Only serial vandals, and violators of Rules 1 and 7 should be permabanned. Otherwise, try to hand out temporary bans.

Ban evasion

[edit source]

When any particularly tenacious serial ban evader is discovered, make sure to revert all of their edits and delete all of their pages/files. This aggressive management is necessary to stop ban evaders from thinking they can continue to edit the wiki one account at a time. If regular editors bring back the edits you've reverted, then leave them be at that point.

Editors will complain on your talkpage, but be resolute and carry this out anyways, or else you WILL have terrible people editing the wiki regularly.

Deleting a Page

[edit source]

If you wish to do a service for the wiki, then please check the Marked for deletion list from time to time. Then, you judge whether each page should be deleted or not. Before deletion, check the What Links Here, especially on templates. If you decide it shouldn't be deleted, then you may remove the Delete template.

Deleting Unmarked Pages

[edit source]

With some exceptions, you shouldn't do this. If you don't have a really good reason, then please mark the page for deletion, and let other Sysops decide. This is good conduct.

Protecting a Page

[edit source]

Pages can be protected for various reasons. This action has the least consequences to pages and users, therefore it's the least regulated.

Just don't excessively protect pages, and don't remove a protection, unless it's somehow not permissible. If the protection aligns with the Examples Subsection, it's most likely permissible.

Examples of Protection

[edit source]

Below are some examples of when pages are typically protected:

  • Templates are always semi-protected, permanently.
  • Pages that experience edit wars are full-protected for a limited period of time. Semi-protection might not work, because autoconfirmed users may be involved.
  • Certain pages can be soft removed. Not deleted, but rather changed to a redirect. Soft removal involves fully protecting the article.
  • Bad pages (i.e. blatant advertisements for hostile splinters) are protected from being created.

Conduct

[edit source]

As a Sysop, you should focus on conduct, and treat regular editors with respect and decency. Otherwise, you'll be a coaly powerSysop. Your primary focus is the health of the wiki. It is a good idea to avoid targeting editors because you don't like them, or because they don't like you. This kind of behavior cripples the wiki by discouraging new contributors, who are the foundation of the wiki. If you want to de-escalate the situation, explain your actions on their talk page.

In general, you should always try to give utmost leeway to editors as long as their edits are in good faith and follow the wiki guidelines, even if you disagree with them. Disagreements should be humbly posted on their talk page. Don't instigate edit wars, because both parties will be guilty.

Not all Sysops are equal. If you have a dispute with another Sysop, then remember their rank, and yours. The more rights a Sysop has, the more of a say they have in manners. Ultimately, Sharty admins have the highest rank, even above the wiki's admin.

Disagreements are okay, but ultimately, the higher ranking Sysop has the final say. Do NOT edit war with a mod if you're a helper. Otherwise, apply common sense.
