4chan, also known as 4cuck or the 'cuck by the soysphere and 4cock or halfchan by 8chan, is the most well known imageboard on the internet. Unless you live in Japan, because 2chan is more important there. Generally, there is a clear rivalry between 4chan and the soysphere, although there occasionally are people who are regulars in both spheres. Despite it's over 20-year history, 4cuck has only had 2 owners: moot (2003-2015) and Hiroyuki Nishimura (de facto under RapeApe's rule) (2015-).

4chan was founded in 2003 by Christoper “moot” Poole, when he was only 15 years old. The website was meant to be an english-language version of 2ch (it wouldn't be the first one: world2ch was created earlier the same year) with a stroke of SA culture. Since moot was a regular of the ADTRW board on SA (the last three letters stand for Tentacle Rape Whorehouse), he first announced 4chan's inception there, which was not taken well by world2ch users, who began the first 4chan-related conflict with SA's pro-4chan faction. The userbase initially consisted of Something Awful refugees (Lowtax's policies brought great dismay among its regulars, who left for 4chan) and part of the Raspberry Heaven population, and, at first, only one board existed: /b/ - Anime/Random, meant to be an experimental and temporary one. However there would soon be more. As a young, but PPH-wise thriving website, 4chan faced two main problems: bandwidth and illegal content. The former and moot's tendency to not pay his bills when they're due caused the site to shut down many times, but only one closure is worth mentioning here: the fourth death of 4chan, a time interval beginning with the 20th of June, 2004, wherein moot pulled the plug, considering it had been the last time 4chan would ever be available, and cited lack of contribution/donations as his motive. It would be back around six weeks later. The larger period of time in which this happened is called the mootxico era, referencing a post moot made in which he claimed to have gone to Mexico.

Around this time, memes such as Pedobear, Cockmongler, Waha (originating from 2chan), and Happy Negro became very popular. Longcat, Desu and Triforce would follow suit a couple of years later. /b/ was generally regarded as 4chan's strainer, as the better posts therefrom would often spread site-wide. W.T. Snacks, the most well known mod at the time, was renowned for randomly banning anons - this actually increased /b/'s overall quality, as many brimmy posters would start fearing his banhammer. His deteriorating relationship with moot is behind the end of his activity (2006).

Unfortunately, early /b/ (by this point split from /a/) was infamous for how much 'P was posted there - the startling amount of pedophillic content spawned the previously-mentioned Pedobear meme (mostly frowned upon in the soysphere), still used in some corners of the Internet to this day. Additionally, up until october of 2004, when they were moved to not4chan (Bibliotheca Anonoma claims it was made by moot, while Nameless Rumia's wiki says it was heavily connected to 4chan, but owned by someone else called saber), /l/ and /sm/ were frequently visited boards that were dedicated to loli and shota, respectively. Not4chan was chiefly a jarty version of 4chan, having twice the sexual predators and only hosting the most degenerate of boards. Thank the Heavens, it died around 2006. In the same year, on the 23rd of August, moot would sticky a post on /b/ ("the Bob Ross sticky") stating that anyone who would post or participate in illegal content (i.e. 'p) would be permabanned and possibly also fedded^🗝️ (v&, if you're an oldfag). Raiding, doxing, and replying to 'p threads also fell under this category, but the fedding part was purportedly only for posting 'p per se. This would later be known as the /b/-day, which determined many trolls to migrate to an altchan called 7chan (which, eventually, also became as "strict", if not even more so than 4chan). Sadly, this was far from the end for 'p:

Allegedly, /b/ briefly became entirely fed moderated in 2010. This would not be surprising, as, even after /b/-day, spammers STILL posted 'p there, until around 2008-2010. Moot possibly stroke a deal with feds in order to keep his website - to this day, it is theorized /b/ janitors are feds since no one can apply as a /b/ janny (needs citationerino).

Rise of Proto-soy culture

While the first example of what is widely considered the original soyjak wouldn't be posted until December 2017, many anons had taken notice of a certain phenotype in late 2015, christening these people "nu-males". This term is still used by EDiots.

In 2023, a small, unknown Sharty user named SOI3337 began hacking away at the postscripts and HTTPS of 4chan, and hacking away at it. On April 15, 2025, the 4chan domain was officially hacked by Captain Gem. Gem announced this on /soy/.

The site had ALL of it’s boards (except for /mlp/, which became /lee/- Lee Goldson) deleted, /qa/ unlocked (becoming /qa/- QA FVCKING VWN), and the front page saying the words “See you so-ACK!”, and all of the jannies were ‘oxxed on /soy/, like Jay Louis Irvin, who lives at 132 N 5th St Apt 3a, Brooklyn, NY 11249-3259? No, you probably didn’t. And this all wouldn’t have happened if Byron Looper tripped and fell.

Project Chanology

Around January 15th, 2008, a call-to-arms thread was posted on /b/ by an anon startled by Tom Cruise's Church of Scientology interview. A video was published on YouTube channel en0nym0us0 as a formal declaration of war. Beginning with January 16th, scientology.org was relentlessly DDoSed, the HQ's were 'zad and many Scientology call centers would be receiving prank calls. CoS would retaliate by pursuing lawsuits - following the advice of Mark Bunker, Anonymous would cease illegal action and the attitude would shift to a peaceful protest sort of one. The conflict would continue for about two months until it would mellow down. Around December of 2010, Scientology claimed victory due to Anonymous' inactivity and got DDoSed again. This event marks the beginning of two phenomena: firstly, there is the separation of Anonymous from 4chan. Due to "hatefags" - oldfag LARPers that were averse to what they viewed as an increasingly moralfagged Anonymous - and it being, you know, 4chan's /b/ they operated on, the latter had to constantly salvage their threads and sometimes migrate to other *chans: 711chan, for example. Eventually they would make their own *chan called 888chan (which closed around 2010, got briefly revived in 2013 and died again in 2014), a safe haven from disruptive groups. Secondly, Anonymous would develop a moral compass (see the first point) and would start targeting organizations they viewed as a threat to human liberty; they mostly stopped ruinating literal whos (unless they were seen as grossly immoral) and actively sought a motive. Basically sharty's /raid/ is more flexible (and more fun) than Anonymous nowadays.

In 2012 4cuck (specifically /b/) attempted to get this image (known as Death Child) as the Vietnamese Hershey’s candy bar cover by spamming #VoteforVictor, but this backfired, as even after the contest ended (a different image ended up winning), it would then be forced TO DEATH on /b/ by a robot known as the aVictorbot, which spammed the death child image and the words #VoteforVictor. Along with the Mongolian, it was one of the two major forced memes on /b/ in the 2010s.

In 2008, a group of CHUDS angry that they couldn’t get a GF discovered that multiple celebrities, such as baseball player Justin Verlander, female actor Kate Upton, multiple foids such as Anita Sarkeesian, and famed transgender (male thinking he is female) activist Brian Wu were all caught in the act having sexual intercourse that was filmed. This was leaked onto /b/, and spread to multiple corners of the internet. Upton was forced to retire, Sarkeesian’s career was ruined, and Wu became a small KF gegbull.
